HOUSTON, Texas - Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez was ejected from Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox after arguing a called third strike and then throwing his shoe and sock at home plate umpire Nick Mahrley.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Astros trailing 2-1. Alvarez took a 1-2 sinker from White Sox reliever Kendall Graveman for a called third strike. Alvarez immediately began arguing the call, and after a brief discussion with Mahrley, he was ejected.

As Alvarez walked away from home plate, he took off his right shoe and sock and threw them in the direction of Mahrley. The shoe and sock landed a few feet in front of the plate, and Mahrley immediately ejected Alvarez from the game.

Alvarez's ejection is the first of his career. He is batting .321 with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs this season.
