Julian Leeser Resigns from Voice to Parliament amid Pressure

Former Assistant Minister for Indigenous Affairs Steps Down

Leeser Cites Concerns over Local Representation

Julian Leeser, the former Assistant Minister for Indigenous Affairs, has resigned from his position and withdrawn his support for the proposed Voice to Parliament. Leeser's decision came after increasing pressure from his constituents and disagreements with the Voice's structure.

Leeser, who has been a vocal advocate for Indigenous rights for over a decade, stated that his primary concern was ensuring that the Voice would adequately represent the diverse perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at the local and regional levels.

The Voice to Parliament, a proposed constitutional amendment, has been a subject of heated debate in Australia. Proponents argue that it would establish a permanent body to advise Parliament on Indigenous issues, while opponents express concerns about its potential impact on Indigenous self-determination.

Following Leeser's resignation, the pressure on the government to address concerns about the Voice's structure has intensified. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to make an announcement on the matter soon.
